WOMEN WHO SLAY SERIES: DJ DOUBLE VISION TWINS

Get to know the hottest twins that are serving up soul, sass & Funk Trap unlike anyone else! They definitely are Shady Women Who Slay!

We constantly get asked the twin questions: “Who’s friendlier? Who’s dumber? Who’s the mean twin?”... the list goes on. Sometimes it seems like everyone's trying make us good cop/ bad cop. We’re more like soul friends at birth. Is that a thing? We have so much in common, but the differences in our personalities complement one another.

Rae can be more of a socialite, enjoying people, events, and new adventures. She’s also into underground music and loves keying in on new, upcoming artist. Nicole loves adventuring but equally enjoys time to herself. She’s cool, calm, and collected with a lil sass keeping classic songs on repeat. It’s really cool when we get together and listen to music. We’re able to bridge new artist inspiration with the sampled beats and lyrics from classic artist. Thankfully, our interest in music has aligned allowing us to have the same passion for DJing!

How did it all start for you two?
We both have had an interest in music since day 1, however we did not begin DJing immediately. We both started Double Vision as a lifestyle brand with fashion collections and events. Eventually learning how to DJ transformed 2 entrepreneurs into the DJ duo, Double Vision. We now continue Double Vision lifestyle brand by coordinating our own events.

Who is your biggest inspiration?
Biggest inspiration ever, definitely Russell Simmons. He paid such a big part in the foundation of DJing and hip hop, while also being an influencer in fashion. That’s dad.
In terms of music, we have so much respect for the duo OSHUN. These 2 queens deliver conscious music that is soothing, yet trappy and opening the minds of so many people. It is so inspirational to see young females taking a deeper route than materialistic rap. (@Oshun)

What single night out has been the most memorable for you guys as a DJ or as an attendee?
Our favorite day has to be DJing for Ben Baller. He was such a huge successor in music prior to his multi-million dollar company. For this idol to host us DJing his event was UNBELIEVABLE...yet it happened! We’re confident people, but being surrounded by such role models is always humbling. It displayed the room for growth and the unlimited opportunities in store for us.

Are you able to share any of your secret tricks with us?
Is there ever just one trick to anyone’s magic? Everything this far has been such a learning process. Understanding the power of believing in ourselves has probably been the biggest force behind so much of our success.

Our life’s have changed drastically after being more aware of our thoughts and the energy. To live a life of achievement, we must fully believe in ourselves and our abilities. We became conscious that doubt, fear, and negative emotions were the limits on our dreams and goals… so even last year while we were still working full time jobs, we began to always see the bigger picture. We knew we would be the creators revolutionizing the industry, we envisioned ourselves collaborating with those companies we were once working for, and we knew we were worthy of these goals. Once this mindset became a habit, we began manifesting all of our wildest dreams.

Where do you think the scene is headed? One year from now? Five years from now?
Genre blending and experimental music is the future. Today’s internet makes is so easy to learn about different music. In the past, if you were a serious music fan, you were more likely to be an fan of one particular genre. Now it feels like there is almost an obsession with having the most diverse music taste. We predict for more musicians to bridge these genres for that niche taste in the future.

If you could eternally be stuck in one year's music scene, which year would it be?
Definitely the 80s! Queen, Michael Jackson, Beastie Boys, Run DMC. That’s just too good to miss. We love that the music was forward- looking. It celebrated life, love, and happiness.

What is one subgenre you think doesn't get the attention it deserves?
Probably would have to say Funk Trap. It definitely doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Have you heard of it? Well actually we hope not because we’re making this subgenre! It’s your new get down so of you want it to give it the attention it deserves, search DJ Double Vision on Itunes!

What is it that you love about the scene / Your subgenre's scene?
Everyone loves funk and everyone loves bass. The contrast and the balance of Funk Trap is unlike anything else. We love that people with a funk upbringing and trap interest are able to come together over this blend. It’s the most badass synth of all time.

What is something that bugs you about the DJ scene?
We try not to let anything really bother us. Everyone has their own style and way of doing things and we respect that. Something frustrating is when “DJs” don’t know the proper DJ knowledge. Just how anyone can be an artist, anyone can be a DJ. There are a lot of people not truly learning the craft.

What is your opinion regarding the difference between old school DJing where everything was restricted to vinyl and modern DJing where most tracks are never put on any physical medium before or after release?
The fact that songs do not all come out on vinyl is unfortunate because it sounds way better. Technology could never truly replicate the sound of vinyl. And I mean, you gotta respect the true DJ technique of spinning vinyl. However, there’s so much ease that comes with digital DJing like the ability to instantly download any song, simple not having to haul around our entire vinyl collection, being able to loop a beat with ease. We’re happy we are able to bridge the two and use both mediums.

What is one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you hear it?
Right now This is America is on repeat. We are listening to in as we write this and while you read this….we’re still listening to it. We both love Childish Gambino’s ability to deliver lyrical flow about substantial topics. His music is always quality and personal. You can tell when a musician treats their music as art.

What is one track that got popular that you can't stand?
It sucks that it’s not surprising when a bad songs is on the charts. It’s today’s norm. Desiigner, Kodak Black and Xxxtenacion are a few rappers that are very annoying to the both of us. Mumble rap is here and we accept that, however when the lyrics are 100% not comprehensible... it’s just weird. Why are we listening to this?! It makes no sense.

Let's get a little personal. What's your personal style? What's your go-to outfit and what type of sunnies do you usually wear?
Fashion is everythingggg. Having a sense of individuality has always been important to us and fashion allows each of us to visually do so. When we were young, of course we had matching outfits on the daily. Once we realized we could dress different, we truly began exploring ways to express ourselves through style.

Nicole’s style is very streetwear chic. She buys a lot of unique denim items, matching sets, and is obsessed with statement boots. Rae enjoys shopping vintage and one of a kind items. Her go-to would definitely be a patterned button up shirt, matching shorts, and some clean sneakers. We both love where fashion is headed. Trends like visors, painted denim, bag belts, and cat eye sunglasses definitely gets us excited for summer. Our favorite sunglasses are colorful retro shades and geometric frames.

How do you guys #KeepItShady?
We keep it shady because we keep it real!
